YEAR 6–7 TRANSITION

Year 6–7 Transition Support

A little more support for a very big transition.

Moving from primary school into secondary school is one of the biggest educational transitions a child experiences.

For many children, the usual orientation days and transition activities are enough.

For others, they are not.

Children who experience anxiety, neurodivergence, learning differences, previous school difficulties or uncertainty around change may benefit from more individualised preparation.

Unstuck Youth provides additional Year 6–7 Transition Support designed around the individual child.

Who is transition support for?

Transition support may be helpful for children who:

  • Are highly anxious about starting secondary school
  • Find change and uncertainty difficult
  • Are autistic, ADHD or otherwise neurodivergent
  • Have learning differences
  • Have previously experienced school refusal or school can't
  • Have had difficult experiences at primary school
  • Struggle with friendships or social confidence
  • Become overwhelmed in busy environments
  • Find organisation and executive functioning difficult
  • Need additional support understanding their new school environment
  • Are worried about getting lost, changing classrooms or managing a timetable
  • Have support needs that may need to be communicated clearly to their secondary school
  • Simply need more preparation than the standard transition process provides

A formal diagnosis is not required.

What can transition support include?

Support is tailored to the individual child and may include:

  • Talking through worries about secondary school
  • Identifying specific concerns
  • Building familiarity with what secondary school will look like
  • Understanding timetables and changing classrooms
  • Preparing for different teachers and subjects
  • Organisation and executive functioning strategies
  • Planning for sensory or emotional overwhelm
  • Developing help-seeking strategies
  • Building confidence communicating with teachers
  • Identifying trusted adults
  • Friendship and social support
  • Understanding reasonable adjustments
  • Identifying what has helped the child succeed previously
  • Parent and carer support
  • Supporting communication with the secondary school where appropriate
  • Developing a practical transition plan
  • Continuing support into early Year 7 where needed

The goal isn't to remove every worry.

Starting secondary school is new.

Some nervousness is completely understandable.

The goal is to help the child feel better prepared, more confident and more able to manage challenges when they arise.

Instead of telling a child:

“You'll be fine.”

We can help them work out:

“What am I worried about, what can I do if that happens, and who can help me?”

For neurodivergent students

Secondary school can involve significantly greater demands on executive functioning, sensory processing, communication and independence.

Students may need to navigate:

  • Multiple teachers
  • Different classrooms
  • Larger environments
  • Increased noise and movement
  • Timetables
  • Lockers
  • Homework across multiple subjects
  • Greater organisational expectations
  • New friendship groups
  • Less direct adult support

Planning for these demands before difficulties emerge can make the transition feel much more manageable.

Support for parents and carers

Parents often have their own questions during the transition to secondary school.

You may be wondering:

  • What adjustments should I ask for?
  • What information does the school need?
  • How involved should I be?
  • How will my child manage independently?
  • What happens if attendance starts declining?
  • How do I know whether my child's anxiety is within the normal range?
  • Who should my child go to if they need help?

Transition support can include parent sessions to help you think through these questions and plan proactively.

When should we start?

There is no single perfect time.

Some families may seek support earlier in Year 6, while others may realise closer to the end of the year that their child is becoming increasingly anxious.

Support can also continue into Year 7 if the young person needs help adjusting once secondary school has actually begun.

Fees

Year 6–7 Transition Support is charged at $130 per 60-minute session.

Support is tailored to the individual child rather than provided as a fixed package.

This means some children may only need a small number of sessions, while others may benefit from ongoing support before and during the transition into Year 7.
